The Cabinet also approved the Small Hydro Power Development Scheme. This focuses on ‘run-of-the-river’ projects, which generate power using the natural flow of rivers without building large dams or causing major displacement and environmental issues. Around 7,000 sites have been identified across the country, with a potential to create about 21,000 MW capacity through small hydro power.Under this scheme, projects ranging from 1 MW to 25 MW capacity will be developed with a total outlay of Rs 2,585 crore. This approach, successfully used in countries like Brazil, Canada, Switzerland, and Sweden, will help India utilise its rivers and seasonal water flows more effectively, he said.
