Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said Assam is steadily moving towards becoming a power surplus state with major investments made to strengthen energy infrastructure and ensure reliable electricity supply across the state.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister said Assam has outlined an energy infrastructure vision worth Rs 14,202 crore by 2035, while four major projects worth Rs 6,235 crore are already under implementation.“Assam is steadily moving towards becoming a power surplus state. With a Ra14,202 cr energy vision and Rs6,235 cr worth of projects already underway, we are strengthening our power infrastructure to support growth and ensure reliable supply for our people,” Sarma said.
Officials said the government is focusing on expanding power generation capacity, improving transmission networks and modernising distribution systems to meet rising electricity demand in both urban and rural areas.
The state is also prioritising renewable energy initiatives, including solar projects, along with upgrades of hydropower and thermal power facilities to improve efficiency and increase supply capacity.
According to officials, Assam’s long-term energy roadmap is aimed at supporting industrial growth, infrastructure development and improving quality of life through uninterrupted electricity supply.The move towards becoming a power surplus state is also expected to strengthen Assam’s position as a key investment destination in the Northeast.Officials stated that several ongoing projects involving substations, transmission corridors and rural electrification infrastructure are expected to significantly enhance the state’s electricity generation and transmission capabilities in the coming years.
