U.S. President Joe Biden has vowed that "we will defend every inch of NATO" to reassure allies on Europe's eastern flank and described Russia's suspension of a landmark nuclear arms control treaty as a "big mistake". Biden spoke during talks with eastern European NATO allies in the Polish capital Warsaw on Wednesday ahead of the first anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022. "The commitment of the United States to NATO .is absolutely clear. Article 5 is a sacred commitment the United States has made. We will defend literally every inch of NATO, every inch of NATO," he said.

The group met amid concerns over Moscow's destabilizing activities in Moldova — a tiny non-NATO country sandwiched between Ukraine and Romania — where summit co-host Iohannis said Russian President Vladimir Putin is pursuing his "pattern of aggressive conduct" one year after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The ittle-known Bucharest 9 grouping is an initiative launched in 2015 by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and Polish President Andrzej Duda. It is aimed at enhancing cooperation among NATO's newest members to support the alliance's objectives of improving security and stability between the Baltic and Black Seas.
