Assam CM:Withdrawal of AFSPA will boost investment in NE

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the AFSPA  has been withdrawn from 60 percent areas from April1.Talking to the media in Guwahati on Thursday, the Chief Minister welcomed the decision of the Centre to withdraw AFSPA partially from 3 states of North East. Sarma said that the act will be in force only in 9 districts and 1 sub- division in Assam following the decision of the Centre. He said that the withdrawal of the act would boost the investment in North East . The Chief Minister said that with the improvement of law and order situation, the decision of the withdrawal of the act from rest of the state will be taken. He added that there are constant efforts being made to bring peace in the hill areas of the state. On the issue of peace talk with ULFA pro talk group, Sarma said that the concerned persons have fast-tracked the process.

Some Arunachal districts diclared disturbed areas

According to MHA Notification issued on April1, 2022, Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts in Arunachal Pradesh and the areas falling within the jurisdiction of Namsai and Mahadevpur police stations in Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh, bordering the State of Assam are declared as ‘disturbed area’ under Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 for six months from April1, 2022 t0 September 30,.2022, unless withdrawn earlier. Notification says-

Now, therefore, Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts in Arunachal Pradesh and the areas falling within the jurisdiction of Namsai and Mahadevpur police stations in Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh, bordering the State of Assam, are declared as ‘disturbed area’ under Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 from 01.04.2022 to 30.09.2022, unless withdrawn earlier.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has welcomed Centre’s move to reduced Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the state. In a tweet, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed gratitude the Government of India. Rio said this is a significant development towards bringing stability, security and prosperity to the North East region. CM  Biren said that due to the consistent efforts of the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the law and order and security situation in Manipur has improved significantly. He also thanked the people of Manipur and all stakeholders for bringing in normalcy which resulted in the reduction of disturbed areas under the Act. He also hoped that the Central government would consider more reduction of disturbed areas under the Act in the future.
