Kerala: Mob assaults army officer in NCC Camp over food poisoning

In Kerala, an Army officer was assaulted during an NCC training camp at KMM College of Arts and Science in Thrikkakkara. The incident occurred late on December 23 when a crowd, reportedly led by CPI(M)/Students' Federation of India (SFI) District Head Bhagya Laxmi, BJP Local Councillor Pramod, and their supporters, stormed the camp premises. The tension started when more than 80 cadets began showing signs of food poisoning, such as vomiting. Based on unconfirmed media reports, some intruders caused trouble at the camp and, at around 11.30 pm, two people physically attacked a uniformed officer on duty.

Camp Commandant Lt Col Karnail Singh expressed frustration with the police's handling of the case, stating that although an FIR was filed at Thrikkakkara Police Station, no arrests have been made. This lack of action raises concerns about the safety of NCC cadets and officers, he said. The State Health Department collected food, water, and stool samples from the camp for analysis. However, no conclusive results have been shared yet. Meanwhile, two people were arrested for slapping and kicking an Indian Army officer at an NCC training camp in Kerala.
The NCC has ordered a departmental-level inquiry into the incident, an official statement said. “In response to the physical discomfort experienced by cadets at the NCC camp organised at the Thrikakkara KMM College, an urgent inquiry has been ordered. The inquiry will be conducted by a committee led by Brigadier Suresh G, the NCC Group Commander of Kollam," the statement read. A total of 513 cadets, including 235 girls, are participating in the camp, which began on December 21 and is scheduled to conclude on December 30.
