Indian grappler Anshu Malik has scripted history as she became the first Indian woman to win a silver medal in the World Wrestling Championships. Anshu lost to Olympic medallist Helen Maroulis of the USA 4-1 in the summit clash of women's 57 kg category at Oslo in Norway Thursday. Maroulis won the gold medal after her splendid show. Anshu Malik is a two-time Asian Championship medalist, which includes gold and a Ranking Series silver medalist.
Anshu Malik has been a trainee of SAI national centre of excellence Lucknow since 2016. She made her debut in the Olympics earlier this year Indian women’s team’s chief coach Kuldeep Malik hailed Anshu’s feat. “Anshu did good leg defence. Her defence while standing was also good. Her attacks were solid. This performance will give her a lot of confidence for future events, including the Olympics,” he said.
India's Sarita Mor, a two-time Asian champion, won a bronze medal in the women's 59 kilogram category after beating Sweden's Sara Lindborg 8-2 in the playoff. Previously, only five Indian women had won bronze at the world championships.
