Amit Shah, Gujarat CM flag off India’s first LNG-powered train

In Gujarat,Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday inaugurated development projects worth Rs1,472 crore and flagged off the country’s first LNG-powered train from Sabarmati Railway Station in Ahmedabad. Shah also inaugurated a WAG-12 Maintenance Shed, constructed at a cost of Rs700 crore for maintenance of railway locomotive engines. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and other dignitaries were present at the programme. Shah said the LNG-powered train would contribute to environmental protection and described the various railway projects as significant for environmental sustainability, passenger amenities and railway safety.

Shah noted that annual diesel consumption in railways has drastically reduced from 293 crore liters to 108 crore liters, with ongoing efforts aimed at eliminating it entirely. He further emphasised that railway electrification has surged from a modest 75 kilometers per year in 2010-11 to around 7,188 kilometers per year, achieving 99.6 percent electrification across the national network.
