The prestigious Tansen Festival, a cornerstone of Indian classical music, began in its traditional form on Monday morning at the Tansen Samadhi site in Hazira, Gwalior. Marking the 101st year of the iconic festival, the opening ceremonies featured shehnai recital, Harikatha, Milad Sharif, chadar covering, and qawwali, paying homage to the legendary maestro Tansen.The morning proceedings commenced with a soulful shehnai performance by Ustad Majid Khan and his companions, who rendered ragamayi compositions in keeping with age-old customs. This was followed by a spiritual Harikatha discourse by Nathpanthi saint Dholebua Maharaj (Sri Sachchidand Nath Ji), who spoke about the bond between divinity and humanity, emphasising that music itself is a form of spirituality. He presented devotional compositions in raga Vrindavani Sarang, including “Mera Sahib ko dil atka” and “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram”, along with other bhajans interwoven in multiple ragas.

Subsequently, Maulana Iqbal Hussain Qadri delivered a Milad Sharif address, highlighting love as the highest form of devotion. His kalam included the verse “Tu hi jalwaanuma hai, main nahin hun.” The ceremony concluded with the offering of a traditional chadar at the mausoleums of Hazrat Mohammad Ghaus and Tansen, presented on behalf of the state government. The chadar was carried with devotional qawwali by Janab Bholu Jankaar, Akhtar Bhai, Sohel Khan, Arif Mohammad, and their companions.The formal inauguration of the Tansen Festival will take place on Monday evening on a grand stage inspired by the historic Chaturbhuj Temple at the Tansen Samadhi complex. Renowned classical musicians from India and abroad will perform during the festival, celebrating the enduring legacy of Tansen.The morning programme was attended by Culture Department Director N.P. Namdev, Ustad Alauddin Khan Arts and Music Academy Director Prakash Singh Thakur, noted dhrupad guru Abhijit Sukhdane, along with artists, dignitaries, academy officials, and media representatives.
