Ex-AAP councillor Tahir Hussain gets life term in IB official murder case

A Delhi court on Friday sentenced former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain to life imprisonment for the murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma during the 2020 Delhi riots. Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh pronounced the sentence to all five accused after hearing arguments on the quantum. The court described the crime as a very serious incident and observed that it had shaken society.  On 13th of this month, the court convicted Hussain and four others for the murder of Ankit Sharma, who was attacked by a mob during the riots. His body was later found in a drain. 
According to the prosecution, Ankit was allegedly killed in the vicinity of his home in Khajuri Khas on February 25, 2020, after he ran into clashes taking place between two groups in the Chand Bagh Pulia (bridge) area. As he attempted to pacify both sides, he was allegedly kidnapped, assaulted, and stabbed many times by a mob of 20-25 people. His body was recovered the next day from a drain in the area.Hussain, who was elected as an AAP councillor from northeast Delhi in 2017, had been suspended by the party following his arrest in connection with multiple cases arising from the 2020 riots.
