Anant chaturdasi has citations in Brahma Purana and Shri Bhavisya Purana. The mythological story mentioned in Shri Bhavishya Purana goes like this -Once on the banks of the Ganges, Dharmaraja Yudhishthira started the Rajasuya Yagya to kill Jarasandha and built a Yagya shala decorated with gems. By applying many precious gems, it started looking like Indra's palace. Many kings were invited for the Yagya. Gandhari's son Duryodhana, while roaming in the Yagyamandapa, fell into a pond. The place where he felt that the water was full was actually illusion and he picked up his clothes and started walking. Seeing this sight, Bhimsen and other princes started laughing. Duryodhana was deeply annoyed by this ridicule and he started thinking of an idea to take revenge for this insult to the Pandavas. Then he made a plan to defeat the Pandavas by gambling with him. Everyone knows the later part of the story. The defeated Pandavas got twelve years' of exile and one year living in disguise. Pandavas had to spend their day by suffering many hardships. Frightened by grief, Yudhishthira wanted to know from Lord Krishna the way to remove all these troubles. Lord Krishna told him this story –
In Satyuga there lived a Vasisthagotriya Brahmin named Sumant. He married Maharishi Bhrigu's daughter named 'Diksha', giving birth to a girl named 'Sushila'. After some time 'Diksha' left the body and died. Sumant married Sushila to Muniraj Kaundinya. When Sage Kaundinya was returning to his ashram with Sushila, it was night on the way. Sage Kaundinya got busy in the evening worship on the banks of the river. Meanwhile, Sushila saw that some women were worshiping some deity wearing beautiful clothes. On talking to them, she came to know that they were doing Anant-Vrat. She also performed rituals there and got the fourteen knots tied in her arm. Sage Kaundinya, seeing a string tied in her arm, asked her. She told everything that had happened while he was worshipping. He got angry and broke the Anant thread and threw it into the fire. The result of this humiliation was that all his property got destroyed. Being troubled by poverty, he started living in sorrow. He started wandering in search of infinity. Then Lord Anant, being influenced by his repentance, told the remedy to keep fast on this Anant Chaturdashi for fourteen years
As told, when Sage Kondinya observed the same fast with devotion, then he got freedom from all the troubles.Hearing such a parable, Dharmaraja Yudhishthira fasted on Anant Chaturdashi as per the orders of Lord Shri Krishna to get rid of his ocean of eternal sorrows, due to which the Pandavas were victorious in the war of Mahabharata and all their sorrows, pains, calamities and sins were destroyed and they recovered the lost kingdom. If any one read or listen to this story on the day of Anant Chaturdasi. May everyone get infinite happiness in life.
