The first edition of Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) began in Chhattisgarh on Wednesday, March 25,2026 in Raipur, with Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya terming it as a "significant milestone" and stating that it will provide a national platform for tribal athletes to showcase and nurture their talent. Around 3,800 participants from 30 states are competing across nine disciplines in the 10-day KITG. The event features competitions in archery, athletics, football, hockey, swimming, weightlifting, and wrestling, while mallakhamb and kabaddi are being showcased as demonstration sports. The Games are being held in three cities of the state: Raipur, Jagdalpur and Ambikapur.
Addressing the ceremony, the Union Minister said that the Khelo India Tribal Games will now be held annually in Chhattisgarh. He stated that tribal athletes from across the country will come to the state to showcase their talent. He described the Games as a significant initiative of the Government, aimed at identifying tribal sporting talent and providing them with the best training to prepare for international competitions.
On the occasion, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao, along with several members of the State Cabinet, was present. The competition, which will continue till April 3, features events in seven sports disciplines, including athletics, hockey, football, archery, wrestling, weightlifting and swimming. In addition, mallakhamb and kabaddi have been included as demonstration sports.
