Modi, Trump hold talks on trade, security at G7 Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France on Wednesday, marking their first face to face interaction in 16 months. The two leaders held wide ranging discussions on defence cooperation, trade ties, regional security and the escalating conflict in West Asia.
A key issue raised by Modi was the safety of Indian seafarers operating in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important shipping route that has witnessed rising tensions in recent weeks. Stressing the importance of protecting Indian citizens working in the maritime sector, the Prime Minister said the security of lakhs of Indian seafarers remains a matter of concern.
"Lakhs of Indian seafarers operate in the maritime sector. Their safety is equally important," Modi said during the meeting, expressing hope that any future understanding involving Iran would take their security into account.

The issue comes amid growing concerns following recent attacks on commercial vessels in the region. Three Indian seafarers were killed in an incident involving the MT Settebello, while two other ships carrying Indian crew members also came under attack during the past week.
Responding to the concern, Trump said he was aware of the incident and assured that efforts were underway to address the situation. "I heard about that. It is a rough profession. We are working at it," he said.
The US President also reaffirmed Washington's support for India on security matters. "India and the US have a great relationship. We cannot be closer," Trump said, adding that the United States would stand by India if it ever faced an attack. The meeting also featured a lighter moment when Trump praised Modi's leadership style. Referring to the Prime Minister, he described him as "calm, cool and a total killer" and said India would continue to do well under his leadership.

The interaction drew attention as it came against the backdrop of recent strains in bilateral ties over trade issues, US tariffs and developments linked to Operation Sindoor. Observers also noted that unlike previous meetings marked by warm embraces, the two leaders greeted each other with a formal handshake.
