India-Singapore relations go far beyond diplomacy: PM Modi

India and Singapore have drawn up a detailed roadmap to deepen their strategic partnership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Thursday after bilateral talks with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in New Delhi. "We share common concerns regarding terrorism," Modi said in his statement to the media. "We believe that fighting against terrorism with unity is the duty of all countries which believe in humanity," he added. Modi said the partnership between the two countries is rooted in shared values and it is guided by mutual interests and a common vision for peace and prosperity.

On his part, Wong said in a world marked by uncertainty and turbulence, the partnership between India and Singapore becomes even more important. "We will expand cooperation in frontier areas such as space. To date, more than 20 Singapore-made satellites have been launched by India. Through the MOU on Promoting Collaboration in the Space Sector, we will broaden this partnership and push the boundaries of what we can achieve together," he said.

A number of pacts were signed between the two sides following the Modi-Wong talks. An agreement on digital asset innovation between the Reserve Bank of India and the Monetary Authority of Singapore is one of them.

Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Wong and discussed ways to further strengthen ties. “Appreciate his constant encouragement for the strengthening of India–Singapore ties,” The visit of Prime Minister Wong coincides with the 60th anniversary of India-Singapore diplomatic relations and reaffirms the continued commitment of both countries to further strengthen this partnership. The visit also provides an opportunity for the Prime Ministers of both nations to engage on regional and international issues of mutual interest. The External Affairs Ministry said that Singapore is an important partner for India, including in the Act East policy, and the bilateral ties between the two nations were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Singapore visit in September last year.
