India, Germany agree to deepen strategic ties

India and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, agreeing to deepen cooperation across a wide range of sectors during the India-Germany Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) held in Berlin on Tuesday. The consultations were co-chaired by India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Germany’s State Secretary Géza Andreas von Geyr. During the visit, Misri also met German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, who appreciated the steady progress in the India-Germany Strategic Partnership. The discussions assumed added significance as both countries mark 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2026, following the celebration of 25 years of their Strategic Partnership last year. To commemorate the milestone, both sides jointly launched a special logo symbolising the enduring strength of bilateral ties.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that during the consultations, the two sides undertook a comprehensive review of their relationship, covering key areas such as trade and investment, defence and security, technology, green and sustainable development, mobility, and people-to-people exchanges. They agreed to further expand collaboration in emerging and priority sectors, including critical technologies, digital governance, renewable energy, green hydrogen, industrial partnerships, innovation, and development cooperation in third countries.
Both countries also exchanged views on major regional and global developments, including the situation in West Asia and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, underscoring their shared interest in global stability and cooperation. In addition to official engagements, Misri interacted with foreign policy experts, Members of Parliament, and senior officials from Germany’s federal and state governments at the Körber Foundation, reflecting the broader scope of India-Germany engagement beyond government channels.
The visit builds on the momentum generated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to India in January 2026, which had given a fresh impetus to bilateral relations. The latest round of consultations is expected to help shape substantive outcomes for the upcoming India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations scheduled later this year. Both sides reaffirmed the importance of the partnership between two of the world’s largest economies and expressed confidence that the expanding strategic relationship will continue to contribute to mutual growth and global prosperity. Misri also invited State Secretary von Geyr to visit India at a mutually convenient time.
