India extends $10 million support for Africa’s Ebola response

Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda on Tuesday announced India's support of USD 10 million towards preparedness, response and recovery efforts amid the ongoing Ebola outbreak in Africa, reaffirming the country's commitment to strengthening health security and resilience across the continent. The announcement was made during a Virtual Summit of African Heads of State and Government and Partners, organised by the African Union and chaired by Évariste Ndayishimiye, who currently serves as Chairperson of the African Union.
Addressing the summit, Nadda reiterated India's support for Africa-led efforts to contain the outbreak and mitigate its impact on affected communities.“India reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Africa-led efforts for outbreak preparedness, response and recovery, and announced support of USD 10 million,” the Health Minister said in a post on X.He noted that India has already supplied 45 tonnes of medical assistance to support regions affected by the outbreak and remains prepared to provide additional aid based on the requirements identified by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and vulnerable countries across the continent.

According to Nadda, India will continue extending support through medical and laboratory supplies, diagnostic kits, essential medicines and nutritional assistance to help contain the spread of the disease and strengthen healthcare systems. The minister also highlighted India's readiness to work closely with African nations through technical collaboration and capacity-building initiatives aimed at enhancing public health preparedness and institutional capabilities.
“India will also partner through technical collaboration and capacity-building support for African health institutions. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India remains committed to working together as a trusted partner in strengthening Africa’s health security and resilience,” he said.
The pledge comes as concerns grow over the resurgence of Ebola in parts of Africa. Ebola is a severe viral haemorrhagic fever caused by infection with the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. The disease is associated with a high mortality rate, and there are currently no approved vaccines or specific treatments available for infections caused by this strain. The international community has intensified efforts to contain the outbreak, with leaders of the G7 and partner countries, including India, Egypt, Kenya and the Republic of Korea, calling for an urgent and coordinated global response to the re-emerging Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.
