India elected to UN Human Rights Council for seventh time

India has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2026–2028 term, marking the country’s seventh tenure on the Geneva-based body that oversees the promotion and protection of human rights globally.Announcing the results of the election held on Tuesday, the UNHRC stated that India’s three-year term will begin on January 1, 2026. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Parvathaneni Harish, expressed gratitude for the global support received during the election process.“India was elected to the Human Rights Council for the term 2026–28 @UN for the seventh time today. Thank all delegations for their overwhelming support. This election reflects India’s unwavering commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms. We look forward to serve this objective during our tenure,” Harish stated in a post on X.

The UN Human Rights Council, established in 2006 by the UN General Assembly, is the main intergovernmental body within the United Nations responsible for addressing human rights issues and making recommendations on their implementation. The Council consists of 47 member states, elected for three-year terms under equitable geographic distribution rules. Seats are divided among regional groups: 13 each for African and Asia-Pacific States, 6 for Eastern European States, 8 for Latin American and Caribbean States, and 7 for Western European and other States.According to information,in the latest election, Angola, Chile, Ecuador, Egypt, Estonia, Iraq, Italy, Mauritius, Pakistan, Slovenia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam were also elected for the term beginning in 2026.India has been an active member of the UNHRC since its inception, serving continuously except for three mandatory breaks in 2011, 2018, and 2025. The country previously held six terms — 2006–2007, 2008–2010, 2012–2014, 2015–2017, 2019–2021, and 2022–2024.
