Ethiopia:rebel groups to form an alliance, wants to oust PM

In Ethiopia, nine anti-government groups, including the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), have agreed to form an alliance against Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's administration. It comes as pressure mounts on Mr Abiy, with rebel forces making advances towards the capital. They set a goal on Friday of bringing down Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed by force or negotiation to then form a transitional government. "We're trying to bring an end to this terrible situation in Ethiopia, which is created single-handedly by the Abiy government," said Berhane Gebrekristos, a TPLF leader and former Ethiopian ambassador to the United States. The government, already embroiled in a year-long war against northern forces, dismissed the creation of the alliance as a stunt and accused some members of past ethnic violence.
However, the government in Addis Ababa has said it's on the brink of victory and will continue to fight what it calls an existential war. Ethiopia’s international partners have called for an end to the hostilities. The OLA and TPLF have already started fighting alongside each other and this week claimed to have captured the town of Kemise, 325km (200 miles) north of Addis Ababa. The United States advised its citizens to leave Ethiopia as soon as possible. "The security environment in Ethiopia is very fluid," the U.S. Embassy said in a statement. The war, which has killed thousands of people and forced more than two million from their homes, has intensified in recent weeks
