Tripura gives jobs to kin of political violence victims

In Tripura, the state government has decided to give government jobs to the next of kin of the victims of political violence in the erstwhile Left Front government. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath made the announcement on Saturday. Speaking at a press briefing in Agartala, Nath said the BJP-led government in Tripura remains committed to delivering justice and honour to families that suffered due to political instability and targeted violence in previous regimes.
He said, as of now, 39 petitions have been received by the state government. The District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police will verify the petitions, and based on their report the recommendation will be made by the committee of the state government to provide jobs to the eligible family members of the victims. Presently, 18 petitioners have got jobs in the Information and Cultural Affairs department, the secondary education department, the revenue department, the elementary education department and the food and civil supplies department of the Tripura government.Nath said, “These 18 people have waited for years for justice. The earlier government ignored their pain. Our government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, stands with those who were wronged.”
The families involved were mostly victims of violence during previous regimes, especially between 1993 and 2018. Several incidents had been highlighted by human rights groups in the past, alleging politically motivated attacks and killings, especially during elections. “We lost our father in a politically motivated attack in 2001,” said Sudip Debbarma, who received a clerical posting. “No one cared for us for years. Now, I feel my father’s sacrifice is finally recognised.” 
Tripura, like many other states in northeast India, has witnessed decades of political unrest and ideological clashes. In several instances, workers of rival parties were targeted and killed. The BJP government claims that political tolerance and peaceful governance have become a priority since the party came to power in 2018. Nath said this move also sends a message that political violence has no place in a democracy. He urged opposition parties to work together to maintain peace.
