SIT to probe into Shillong violence: CM tells Meghalaya assembly

The Meghalaya government has constituted a special investigation team to identify and prosecute those involved in the recent violence during a students' organisation rally in Shillong, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma told the assembly on Monday.Making a statement on the first day of the assembly's autumn session, the chief minister said the SIT, headed by the inspector general of police (law and order), has been tasked with "identifying and investigating all those involved in the violence, particularly those responsible for attacks on Assam-registered vehicles, and ensuring their prosecution in accordance with law".

According to an order issued by Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang, it will work to identify and apprehend all those involved in the protests, including masked participants and those who used two-wheelers with covered or obscured number plates, by analysing CCTV footage and other video and photographic evidence. The SIT has been constituted with immediate effect to ensure a fair, impartial and expeditious investigation into the circumstances leading to the incidents, the order said. The five-member team will be headed by Inspector General of Police (Law & Order) DNR Marak. Other members include Deputy Inspector General of Police (Eastern Range) S. Nongtnger, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police V Syiem, Superintendent of Police (Cyber) Dheeraj Yadav and Deputy Superintendent of Police (Crime), East Khasi Hills, Bipul Das.
Outside the House, Sangma said the government has also invited the Khasi Students’ Union(KSU) for a discussion on their demands.
