Southwest monsoon has officially arrived in Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced on Thursday. The monsoon normally reaches Kerala around June 1. On May 15, the IMD had forecast that the southwest monsoon was likely to set in over Kerala on May 26, with a model error margin of ± four days. The IMD said the monsoon had further advanced into the remaining Thursday. Theparts of the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, parts of the westcentral and eastcentral Arabian Sea, the entire Lakshadweep islands, Kerala and Mahe, parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, the remaining Comorin area, southeast Bay of Bengal and more parts of the southwest, westcentral, eastcentral and northeast Bay of Bengal.

On Thursday morning, heavy rain continued to douse several parts of the state, with the IMD issuing an orange alert for Alappuzha, Kottayam and Ernakulam districts, and warning of thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and surface winds that could reach speeds of up to 40 kmph.If weather conditions remain favourable, the seasonal rains are expected to reach large parts of north India by early July.
