Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth over Rs4,000 crore in Sikkim, marking the closing ceremony of Sikkim’s 50th Year of Statehood celebrations at Paljor Stadium. Addressing a public gathering, the Prime Minister described the Northeast as India’s “Ashtalakshmi” and said Sikkim holds a vital place in the region’s growth story. “For the Northeast, we have not only adopted the Act East policy, which he described as India's 'Ashtalakshmi'-representing the multifaceted nature of prosperity, wealth, and auspiciousness.Asserting that tourism was the mainstay of Sikkim's economy, Modi said his government's focus is on boosting the state's connectivity, which would increase tourist inflow. Modi asserted that the northeast, including Sikkim, is set to become the hub of futuristic growth and sustainable development through initiatives such as organic agriculture.

A vibrant cultural performance titled “1000 Steps of Unity,” featuring over 1,500 artists, showcased the rich art and culture of the country. The Prime Minister praised the performance as a true reflection of the spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.” Governor of Sikkim Om Prakash Mathur, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, state ministers, and Members of Parliament also attended the event. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for the development initiatives and reaffirmed Sikkim’s commitment to contributing to the vision of a Viksit Bharat. Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister played football with local youth and visited the Orchidarium at Ridge Park in Gangtok.
