Rain fury in Jammu:Over 5000 people evacuated from flooded parts

More than 5,000 people were evacuated from the banks of various flooded rivers and inundated low-lying areas in the Jammu region as rescue agencies and the administration continued to reach out to stranded people in flood-hit Jammu and Samba districts. Most of the Jammu division, which has been inundated by flash floods triggered by heavy rains, continued to receive rain, although of less intensity. Efforts to restore water supply, electricity and internet services that have been severely hit are underway, but schools and colleges have been ordered shut. Jammu recorded 380 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, making this the highest rainfall ever recorded in Jammu in a 24-hour period since 1910, when the observatory was established. Union minister Jitendra Singh said Divisional Commissioner Kumar is in constant touch with him and is currently convening a meeting of officers from different departments.

At least 34 people were killed, and several others injured after a massive landslide struck the Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra track near Ardhkumari in Jammu and Kashmir's Katra, amid heavy rain on Wednesday. Rescue teams continue to search the debris amid fears that more individuals may still be trapped. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of lives due to a landslide on the route to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Temple. In a social media post,  Modi said the administration is assisting all those affected. He wished for the speedy recovery of those injured in this accident. The Prime Minister also prayed for everyone’s safety and well-being.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed condolences to the families and directed officials to provide immediate assistance to those injured in the accident. Meanwhile, day by day, following incessant rains that triggered shooting stones and landslides at multiple locations between Banihal, Ramban, Udhampur and Nagrota in Jammu division. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday questioned the preparations for a calamity like the damage that has been caused by the massive flash floods caused by cloudbursts in the Union Territory on Tuesday. He compared the situation after the 2014 floods to the latest developments and asked if any lessons were learnt.

Train operations from Jammu were restored on Wednesday afternoon after a day-long suspension caused by torrential rain. Earlier, Northern Railways had announced the cancellation of 22 trains scheduled to halt at or depart from Jammu and Katra stations, citing severe weather conditions across the division. Additionally, 27 trains were short-terminated at various stations, including Firozpur, Manda, Chak Rakhwalan and Pathankot.

The historic Mughal road connecting the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch in the Jammu division with the Shopian district in the Kashmir valley shall also remain closed for vehicular traffic amid landslides and mudslides at multiple locations.
