Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated Mizoram's first railway line and flagged off the state's maiden Rajdhani Express connecting Aizawl with Delhi. The Rs 8,070-crore Bairabi–Sairang railway line, considered one of the most challenging in Indian Railways' history, was sanctioned in 2008-09 and construction began in 2015. The line includes 45 tunnels, 55 major bridges and 87 minor bridges.

Modi, speaking from Mizoram's Lengpui Airport, apologized for not being able to reach Aizawl due to bad weather, saying he could still feel the people's warmth and affection from there. He said now Aizawl will be on India's railway map… Overcoming many challenges, including difficult terrain, this Bairabi-Sairang railway line has become a reality. The skills of our engineers and the spirit of our workers made this possible." He recalled laying the foundation stone for the project a few years ago and emphasised that the new line now directly connects Sairang in Mizoram with Delhi via the Rajdhani Express, marking a historic milestone in linking the state to the national railway network.Mizoram plays major role in 'Act East' policy; Kaladan multimodal transit project, railway lines to connect state with Southeast Asia, he said.

Slamming opposition, PM Modi said, "For a long time, some political parties in our country have practised vote bank politics. Their focus was always on places that had more votes and seats. The entire Northeast, including states like Mizoram, suffered greatly because of this attitude. But our approach is very different. Those who were earlier neglected are at the forefront now. Those who were once marginalised are the mainstream now."

PM Modi also lays the foundation stone and inaugurates multiple development projects worth over Rs 9000 crore at Aizawl.
