Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia has announced the launch of drone-based mail transmission service by Department of Posts in Himachal Pradesh. The service was started on Friday between Mandi Head Post Office and Rehardhar Branch Post Office in the State. The initiative builds upon feedback received during the interactions of the Union Minister with Gramin Dak Sevaks and Postal Assistants, where the need for faster and more efficient connectivity in remote and difficult terrains was highlighted. The aerial service covered the route spanning a 12-km road distance but just 6km as the crow flies in a mere six minutes. On the return leg, the drone carried accumulated parcels and postal items back to the central hub in 12 minutes. Standard ground delivery to the remote Rehardhar branch traditionally takes an entire day due to winding mountain roads, but the automated round trip now concludes in under 20 minutes.

Ministry of Communications has said that the Department of Posts has planned the deployment of drone-based mail transmission across around 150 identified routes in Himachal Pradesh and Assam over the next two to three months. The Ministry added that Rehardhar Branch Post Office, located about 12 kilometres from Mandi Head Post Office, currently takes over two hours to connect through conventional arrangements. It added that with drone-based transmission, the transit time has been reduced to just about six minutes. While this pilot programme addresses local bottleneck regions, it aligns with a larger national strategy, as 150 post offices have been selected for the scheme across India, with plans to eventually expand drone connectivity to 110 postal facilities throughout Himachal Pradesh.
