India must build resilient supply chains for clean energy: Kumaraswamy

Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries H.D. Kumaraswamy on Thursday said India’s energy security is increasingly dependent on its ability to manufacture, innovate and build resilient supply chains for clean energy technologies.
Addressing the Special Plenary Session on “Energy Security & Supply Chains” at the 7th CII International Energy Conference and Exhibition in New Delhi, Kumaraswamy said geopolitical tensions, supply disruptions and competition for critical minerals have transformed the global energy landscape.“Today, under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s energy security is no longer defined solely by access to energy resources. It is increasingly determined by our ability to manufacture, innovate and build resilient supply chains for the technologies that will power the future,” he said. The Minister stressed that India must move beyond being a major consumer of clean energy technologies and emerge as a global producer of equipment, materials and technologies driving the energy transition.

Highlighting the importance of the steel sector, Kumaraswamy said steel is the backbone of renewable energy infrastructure, including solar parks, wind turbines, transmission networks, batteries, ports and green hydrogen projects. He reiterated the government’s target of 300 million tonnes of steelmaking capacity by 2030, while stressing the need for greener and more efficient production. He also highlighted initiatives such as the Rs10,900-crore PM E-DRIVE Scheme and the Rs18,100-crore PLI Scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell Batteries, aimed at strengthening domestic manufacturing and reducing import dependence.
On critical minerals, Kumaraswamy said India is expanding domestic capabilities and international cooperation. He cited the Rs7,280-crore scheme for manufacturing sintered rare earth permanent magnets as an important step towards securing supply chains for automotive, defence, renewable energy and aerospace sectors.Calling for closer cooperation between the government, industry, academia and research institutions, the Minister said resilient supply chains would be crucial to India’s industrial transformation and its vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
