Gujarat ATS arrests eight Jaish-e-Mohammed operatives

Gujarat ATS arrested eight people associated with the banned terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammed by conducting joint raids in the relevant areas of Banaskantha, Mehsana, Navsari, Patan in Gujarat and Dewas districts of Madhya Pradesh. Seven of the accused were arrested from different districts of Gujarat, while one was apprehended from neighbouring Madhya Pradesh. The case has been filed under Sections 13 (punishment for unlawful activities), 17 (punishment for raising funds for terrorist acts), 18 (punishment for conspiracy), 38 (offence relating to membership of a terrorist organisation) and 39 (offence relating to support given to a terrorist organisation) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. Gujarat ATS DIG Sunil Joshi says, "Gujarat ATS, in anti-terrorism and radicalisation-related work, has been quite proactive. Therefore, in the last 3.5 years, the ATS has registered 10 cases and arrested 30 accused.

According to the ATS all these accused were in touch with Pakistani handlers Abdullah and Mohammad Umar. They were also working to translate the literature of the banned terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammed into Gujarati and spread its ideology. A total of 254 pieces of literature, including the flag of Jaish-e-Mohammed, were recovered from the accused. The ATS has interrogated all the arrested people in this regard. The police also invoked Sections 148 and 61 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. According to ATS officials, Section 148 pertains to conspiracy to commit offences punishable under Section 145 of the BNS, while Section 61 deals with criminal conspiracy. Officials added that Section 147 of the BNS relates to waging war, attempting to wage war or abetting the waging of war against the Government of India.

The ATS said three of the accused are residents of Bhagal in Palanpur, Banaskantha district. Three others are associated with Jamia Abul Hasan Madrasa in Khadiyasana village of Siddhpur in Patan district. One accused is linked to Jamia Rahmaniya in Ambheta village of Navsari district, while another is a resident of Dewas in Madhya Pradesh.
