Curfew imposed, internet suspended in Manipur’s Ukhrul after violence

Fresh violence erupted in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Tuesday morning following the alleged assault of a member of the Tangkhul Naga community, with several abandoned houses set on fire and shots fired, police officials said. The flare-up prompted the state government to suspend internet services in the district for five days as a preventive measure.According to police, armed men torched abandoned houses and fired multiple rounds in the Litan Sareikhong area. “The situation remains tense, and security forces are trying to bring the situation under control,” a police officer said.

The latest incident comes a day after two Tangkhul Naga organisations restricted the movement of Kukis in Ukhrul and neighbouring Kamjong districts, escalating tensions in the region. In response to the deteriorating law and order situation, the Manipur government ordered the suspension of internet services, including broadband, VPN and VSAT, across the revenue jurisdiction of Ukhrul district for five days.Locals who fled their homes reportedly confronted security forces, alleging failure to prevent the firing in the area. Videos circulating on social media showed thick plumes of smoke rising from the hill areas, suggesting widespread arson.
Hundreds of villagers belonging to Kuki and Tangkhul Naga communities—mostly women, children and elderly persons—have been fleeing Litan Sareikhong and nearby Kuki villages over the past two days to safer locations in Ukhrul and Kangpokpi districts, officials said. Many displaced residents have taken shelter in Motbung and parts of Saikul in Kuki-majority Kangpokpi district. On Monday, Manipur minister Govindas Konthoujam said at least 21 houses had been burnt in the violence and described the situation as tense. He added that additional security forces had been deployed in the affected areas to restore calm.
Meanwhile, police said two drivers who were stranded at Lamlai Chingphei Kuki village under the Litan police station limits after their trucks broke down were safely rescued on Monday. Two Tangkhul Naga organisations—Katho Long and Katho Katamnao Long—have imposed a ban on the movement of Kukis in Ukhrul and the adjoining Kamjong district, further heightening tensions in the violence-hit region.
