Chirag seeks President's rule in West Bengal, Sukant released

Union Minister Chirag Paswan has condemned the alleged gang rape of a law student in West Bengal and advocated clamping of the President's rule on the state. Paswan spoke to reporters in Bihar's Patna, where he was asked about the incident in connection with which four persons, including the prime accused who has alleged links with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress, have been arrested. "The situation in Bengal has become horrifying. Not a day passes without incidents of murder, loot and rape. In most such cases, the culprits have been associated with the party in power there", alleged the NDA partner.

Meanwhile, West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar was released from Lalbazar Police Headquarters on Sunday morning, where the police kept him after he was detained Saturday, when he was protesting against the alleged gangrape incident at South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata.

MP Mahua Moitra on Saturday said that misogyny exists in every party, adding that the Mamata Banerjee-led political outfit is different as it does not shy away from condemning its own leaders for their loose talk. Moitra was referring to a Trinamool statement in which it dissociated itself from party MP Kalyan Banerjee and MLA Madan Mitra's controversial comments with regard to the law student's gang-rape, which has created a huge public outcry in the state.In his remark Kalyan Banerjee said on Friday that a woman should be aware of the company she keeps before going out with men who have "dirty mindsets". Madan Mitra resorted to survivor-shaming, stating that the law student could have avoided the fate had she not gone to college alone. "This incident has sent a message to girls that if someone calls you when the college is closed, don't go, nothing good will come of it. If that girl had not gone there, this incident wouldn't have happened," Madan Mitra said.

Earlier,Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress issued a statement, saying that the statements given by Kalyan Banerjee and Madan Mitra were made in their personal capacities, and that they did not reflect the party's official position. "Our stance remains resolute; we have zero tolerance for crimes against women and demand the strictest possible punishment for all those involved in this heinous crime," it added. A woman student of South Calcutta Law College was gang-raped for which three men were arrested apart from a college security guard. The main accused has been identified as Manojit Mishra, 31, a former student and current general secretary of the South Kolkata district of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). Two others have been identified as Zaib Ahmed, 19, a first-year student, and 20-year-old Pramit Mukherjee, another student.
