BJP's Yumnam Khemchand Singh to be next Manipur CM

The BJP on Tuesday elected Yumnam Khemchand Singh as the legislature party leader in Manipur. Khemchand will take oath as the next CM of Manipur. The post has been vacant ever since N Biren Singh resigned on February 9, 2025 amid a prolonged period of ethnic violence in the state. Just days later, presidential rule was imposed in Manipur. Khemchand Singh's name as the next CM of Manipur was announced on Tuesday after he was elected as the legislature party leader of the Manipur BJP, following a meeting held in New Delhi.The BJP's central observer for Manipur, Tarun Chugh, and its northeast in-charge, Sambit Patra, attended the meeting.

Manipur's assembly has been in a state of suspended animation - inactive but not dissolved - after President's Rule came in February 2025. There are 37 BJP MLAs in Manipur's 60-member assembly. Initially, 32 BJP candidates won the 2022 assembly election. Five Janata Dal (United) candidates out of the six who got elected later defected to the BJP.
