In Jammu and Kashmir, at least 9 people died in rain-related incidents. Four deaths reported in Doda district as torrential downpour continued to pound the region for a third consecutive day on Tuesday. Several rivers, including Tawi and Chenab River, were flowing above or nearing the danger mark. Rain-triggered landslides and mudslides also resulted in the closure of many roads, including the Jammu-Srinagar national highway. The Indian Army stepped in and began rescuing people from the Gadigarh area.

The water level of the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir rose to 899.3 metres on Tuesday following heavy rainfall. Deputy Commissioner Harvinder Singh said that apart from the swelling of the Chenab, reports of cloudbursts were also received, which led to the washing away of National Highway 244. Five people were killed and 14 others injured in a landslide hit the route to Mata Vaishno Devi shrine atop Trikuta hills in Reasi district on Tuesday, officials said. Rescue operations are underway near the Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Adhkwari where the landslide hit, they said. The landslide was triggered by heavy rains across several parts of Jammu and Kashmir for the third day on Tuesday. District-wise helpline numbers issued amid heavy rain.

Authorities have warned of possible cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides in high-altitude areas until at least August 27. Rescue and relief teams have been placed on alert in vulnerable areas, officials said.

In Kashmir, moderate to heavy rain lashed the southern districts, with heavy downpours over higher reaches. While no flood alert was issued for the Jhelum river, water levels were expected to rise. Central Kashmir reported light to moderate showers, while north Kashmir saw light rain or dry weather.
