Mirabai wins hat-trick of gold at CWG

Mirabai Chanu reminded the world why she remains the undisputed queen of Indian weightlifting, delivering a performance worthy of a champion as she clinched her third successive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women's 48kg category in Glasgow on Sunday.  The 31-year-old lifter produced a record-breaking performance, lifting 85kg in the snatch to set a Commonwealth and Games record in the category. She then lifted 105kg in the clean and jerk, another Games record, to finish with a total of 190kg. With this victory, Mirabai Chanu won her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal, having also bagged the yellow metal in the 2018 and 2022 editions. It is also India’s first gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated Indian weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu after she clinched her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal, describing her latest triumph as another glorious chapter in Indian weightlifting. Chanu delivered a dominant performance in the women’s 48kg event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing India’s first gold medal of the Games. Her victory came shortly after compatriot Rishikanta Singh Chanambam won silver in the men’s 60kg category.
