FIFA World Cup final 2026: Spain outlasts Argentina 1-0

Spain are world champions. La Roja edged Argentina 1-0 in a thrilling FIFA World Cup final to lift the 2026 title, capping off a remarkable tournament with football's biggest prize. Spain defeated Argentina in extra time on Sunday evening to claim their second World Cup title. Ferran Torres scored a dramatic extra-time winne and shattered Lionel Messi's dreams of a triumphant farewell to football's greatest stage.

Barcelona striker Torres lashed home a thumping finish in the 106th minute to reward a dominant display by Spain against an Argentina team who failed to register a single shot on target in 120 minutes. A star-studded crowd of 80,663 that included US President Donald Trump packed East Rutherford's MetLife Stadium to see if Argentina captain Messi could crown his glittering career with a second World Cup victory.

The scoreline barely reflected Spain's superiority. Argentina failed to register a shot for the opening 70 minutes, the longest wait for a first attempt in a World Cup final since records began in 1966. Messi, the heartbeat of Lionel Scaloni's side, managed just 22 touches during that period as Spain's midfield cut off the supply lines that have so often brought the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner to life.
Argentina threw bodies forward in the closing minutes, but Spain remained composed. Messi produced one dangerous cross that flashed across the six-yard box and Merino bravely blocked another effort with his face, yet the holders never truly looked capable of forcing penalties.
When referee Slavko Vincic blew for full-time, Spain were deserved world champions. They had spent almost two hours controlling every aspect of football's biggest match before finally receiving the reward their performance deserved.
