Jannik Sinner beats Taylor Fritz to clinch US Open title

Jannik Sinner won his second Grand Slam title of 2024 on Sunday when he defeated Taylor Fritz in the US Open final, shattering American hopes of a first male champion at the majors in 21 years. World number one Sinner, who won his maiden Slam at the Australian Open in January, became the first Italian man to triumph in New York with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 victory.

Sinner took two hours and 16 minutes to beat Fritz, who played in his maiden Grand Slam final. Fritz went into the match after taking down the likes of 2022 US Open finalist Casper Ruud and World No.4 Alexander Zverev. But against the top-ranked Sinner, he looked out of sorts for most part. Andy Roddick remains the last American to claim the US Open men’s singles title in 2003.

Fritz tried to keep Sinner under pressure in the second set as the scorecard once stood at 4-4. But Sinner brought forth his A-game and broke Fritz’s serve to go 5-4 up, after which he held his serve to win the second game and go two sets up. Fritz improved his first serves and won 83 percent of his points, but Sinner was simply outstanding, winning all 14 points. Sinner earned two championship points after which Fritz’s unforced error on a forehand volley brought the curtain down on the match.
