Arnab Goswami arrest: union minster termed it attack on press freedom

In Maharashtra, Police on Wednesday arrested Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami for allegedly abetting suicide of a 53-year-old interior designer.A police official said, a team of Alibaug Police picked up Goswami from his residence. In 2018, an architect and his mother committed suicide over alleged non-payment of dues by Goswami's Republic TV, the official said.In May this year, State Home Minister Anil Deshmukh had announced that a re-investigation has been ordered on a fresh complaint by Adnya Naik, daughter of the architect Anvay Naik.Deshmukh said, Adnya alleged that the Alibaug Police had not investigated the case which she claimed drove her father and grandmother to suicide in May 2018.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar has condemned the attack on press freedom in Maharashtra. Referring to the arrest of Arnab Goswami in Mumbai on Wednesday morning , Javadekar expressed displeasure over the way press is being treated in the state. He said, the incident reminds of the emergency days when the press was treated in a similar manner. The Minister also condemned the Congress party and said that the party led by Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi is displaying its fascist and emergency mindset in Maharashtra.

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi or MVA government has never acted vindictively against anyone since it came to power last year. He also claimed that the state government or any political party had nothing to do with the arrest. Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik termed Arnab Goswami's arrest as "Part 2 of India's Most Wanted".

BJP's state unit chief Chandrakant Patil condemned the arrest saying that it was meant to muzzle his voice for speaking against the Maharashtra government, the Congress and its leadership. "Reopening this (suicide abetment) case, which was already closed, means it is an attempt to stop the voice of Arnab Goswami. The BJP and the people of this country will not tolerate this," Patil added.
