A teenager was arrested for allegedly plotting a "mass shooting" at a Hindu place of worship in the US state of Illinois, with investigators recovering a manifesto expressing white supremacist ideology and references to violence against people of Indian descent. Alexandros Paporakis, 19, of Palatine village, was arrested on October 11 and charged with making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of a weapon. According to investigators, the youth had tried to open fire, "potentially targeting" the place of worship in the Aurora city in Illinois, but his gun jammed, forcing him to drive back home, a move that prevented a mass murder.
Authorities said that Paporakis drove from his mother’s home in Palatine to the temple in Aurora on Sunday, which had been filled with people. Police said he wanted to “kill a significant number of Indians." Paporakis is facing gun charges and is accused of making a terrorist threat. He has been ordered to be held without bond by a Cook County judge, who placed a healthcare order on the teen, noting that he’s being treated for ADHD, depression, anxiety, and is receiving cross-sex hormones for a sex change.
The Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh-USA (HSS-USA) on Thursday expressed deep concern over an attempted mass-shooting plot at a Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois. “The allegations are profoundly disturbing for Hindu Americans and for everyone who cherishes religious freedom and the right to gather and worship without fear,” the HSS-USA said in a statement in Washington. It urged Hindu communities across the United States to remain calm, united, and vigilant.
