Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has highlighted India’s industrial presence in Europe, citing Tata Steel’s operations in the Netherlands as an example of the growing international reach of Indian companies.“The only steel plant left in the Netherlands today is a Tata Steel plant,” Goyal said during his official visit, drawing attention to the Indian company’s contribution to the Dutch industrial sector.
Tata Steel operates an integrated steelmaking facility at IJmuiden, near Amsterdam, which supplies steel to industries including automotive manufacturing, construction and engineering. The plant remains an important part of the Netherlands’ manufacturing ecosystem.During his visit, Goyal engaged with Dutch business representatives and maritime sector officials to explore opportunities for expanding bilateral trade, investment and industrial cooperation.
Goyal also toured the Port of Rotterdam, a major European trade gateway, accompanied by its Chief Executive Officer Boudewijn Siemons. The discussions highlighted the importance of port infrastructure and logistics networks in connecting Indian businesses with European markets.Pitching for stronger commercial partnerships, Goyal called on Dutch companies to combine their expertise in technology and innovation with India’s skilled workforce and manufacturing capabilities. He emphasised that India offers opportunities beyond its large consumer market, particularly in research, advanced manufacturing and innovation.

The engagement comes as India seeks to expand its economic partnership with the Netherlands by encouraging investment and strengthening supply chains. Dutch expertise in technology, engineering and logistics could complement India’s growing industrial capacity and skilled talent pool.Meanwhile, Tata Steel’s IJmuiden operations face challenges linked to high energy costs, international competition and the transition towards cleaner steelmaking. The facility has also faced scrutiny over its environmental impact, making emissions reduction and investment in greener production important priorities.Closer India-Netherlands cooperation could create opportunities across industrial technology, manufacturing, research and sustainable production, while improving access to European markets for Indian businesses.Goyal’s visit forms part of India’s broader effort to strengthen international trade partnerships, attract investment and expand the global presence of Indian industries.
