As the clock struck midnight, fireworks lit up the skies as crowds gathered at major landmarks, ushering in the New Year with optimism and celebration. It takes 26 hours for the new year to be welcomed across 39 different time zones. It all starts on Christmas Island in Kiribati, an island country in the central Pacific Ocean. Hawaii, American Samoa and many of the US outlying islands are among the last places to celebrate the new year. Bengaluru buzzed with energy as crowds spilled onto Mahatma Gandhi Road and Brigade Road. Fireworks illuminated the night sky as people across Bengaluru welcomed New Year 2026 amid celebrations.
Revellers ushered in the New Year in Kashmir with special programmes at the famous tourist spots across the valley. Tourists and locals made a beeline to the tourist destinations of Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg to ring in 2026.

South Korea observes two New Year celebrations each year. January 1, known as Sinjeong, marks the beginning of the calendar year and is recognised as a public holiday.

Japan welcomed 2026 with its traditional New Year celebrations, known as Shogatsu. The festival begins on January 1 and continues for several days. As part of the tradition, temple bells are rung 108 times on New Year's Eve, symbolising the removal of earthly desires. Homes are cleaned and decorated with pine, bamboo and straw, representing renewal, good fortune and a fresh start.
