In a sudden move, Vijay Rupani resigns as Gujarat chief minister. Rupani, who took over as chief minister of Gujarat in August 2016, stepped down on Saturday. After resigning as CM, Rupani said that the journey of Gujarat's development should be moved under new leadership. He a year before the state heads to the polls at the end of 2022. It is unclear at this time what precipitated Rupani's resignation.
Vijay Rupani met Gujarat governor Acharya Devvrat and submitted his resignation to him. He was accompanied by the Bharatiya Janata Party national general secretary Nitin Patel Rupani announced his resignation while speaking to mediapersons but did not outline the reason behind his decision.Rupani is the fourth BJP chief minister to step down in recent months; in July BS Yediyurappa resigned as Chief Minister of Karnataka in July and the double whammy in Uttarakhand, where Tirath Singh Rawat quit barely four months after replacing Trivendra Rawat.
