USA: at least 42 migrants found dead in truck near San Antonio city

In USA, at least 42 people have been found dead inside a tractor-trailer in San Antonio, Texas. As per agencies report, the truck was found next to railroad tracks in a remote area on the city's southern outskirts. San Antonio's KSAT television reported 42 people dead inside the truck, in a presumed migrant smuggling attempt in South Texas. The local news outlet said police had blocked a road on Monday evening and surrounded an 18-wheeler that had been abandoned next to railroad tracks in a secluded area southwest of the city. Images posted online showed US Border Patrol, police vehicles, fire trucks and ambulances at the scene.

Earlier this month, the US Border Patrol warned migrants not to risk their lives trying to cross the desert border amid record-breaking temperatures. Temperatures in San Antonio, which is about 160 miles (250 km) from the Mexican border, swelled to a high of 103 degrees Fahrenheit (39.4 degrees Celsius) on Monday with high humidity. Meanwhile, Mexican foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard said the Mexican consul was en route to the site dozens of people were found dead in a truck. Ebrard said in a tweet that the victims' nationalities were still unknown. “Tragedy in Texas. Reportedly suffocated in trailer box. Consul en route to the point. Condolences to the victims and their families. We don't know nationalities yet,” he wrote on Twitter.

Texas governor Greg Abbott was quick to blame the tragedy on president Joe Biden.“These deaths are on Biden. They are a result of his deadly open border policies. They show the deadly consequences of his refusal to enforce the law,” he wrote on Twitter.

At least 650 migrants died crossing the US-Mexico border in 2021, according to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), a United Nations agency that monitors migration — the highest death toll since records began in 1998. The US Border Patrol estimates 557 migrants died along the border from October 2020 through September 2021.
