In Jordan, gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a church on Friday, killing seven people and wounding 34 others, authorities said. The shooting took place at a Greek Orthodox church in Karak, about 180 kilometres (110 miles) south of the capital, Amman. The unidentified gunmen reportedly arrived in a car, entered the church and opened fire before fleeing. Khaled Burqan, a man who had been attending the funeral, told Al-Mamlaka that dozens of people had been attending the funeral and at least two men, one carrying a rifle and another carrying a pistol, opened fire on them for several minutes. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack and Jordanian authorities did not say who was responsible.

In a news conference, Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya said authorities were working to apprehend the perpetrators which he described as a "group of extremists". Jordan's King Abdullah II said authorities would "confront the terrorist act that targeted Karak with the harshest penalties"."The terrorist attack against Karak will be met with the harshest retaliation. Those who delude themselves into thinking that they can divide Jordanians with their bullets have no chance in the face of our unity," he said in a statement.
Christians make up a minority of Jordan's population. The country is home to several biblical sites that attract Christian pilgrims from around the world. Jordan has been increasingly targeted by Iranian attacks this year since the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran in February.
India on Saturday unequivocally condemned an attack on a church in Jordan's Karak governorate that left at least seven people dead and 34 wounded. New Delhi said it stands "firmly" with the government and the "friendly people" of Jordan in "this difficult hour".
