UP: 9 killed as bus catches fire on Yamuna E-way in Gr. Noida

In Uttar Pradesh, nine passengers were killed after a bus travelling from Delhi to Mahoba caught fire on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida, officials said on Thursday. They said 20 passengers were rescued safely during the incident that took place on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday. As per FIR, the driver of the bus  allegedly ignored repeated warnings from passengers about a burning smell and refused to stop the vehicle even as flames erupted in the vehicle.

The FIR was registered on the complaint of Sunil Kumar, a passenger travelling on the bus. According to his complaint, he boarded Raj Kalpana Travels' bus from Delhi to Mahoba. Around 30-35 passengers were on board. At around 11.30 pm, when the bus reached near kilometre 33 of the Noida-Agra route on the Yamuna Expressway, passengers noticed a burning smell coming from the driver's cabin.Despite the warning, the driver did not stop the bus to check the issue, according to the FIR. It further alleges that the driver and conductor continued smoking cigarettes in the cabin. Shortly afterwards, flames suddenly erupted near the driver's seat.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire originated from a blast in the bus's air conditioning system, which ignited the engine's lubricating oil and caused the fire to spread rapidly. The bus driver and conductor survived the fire, with cops detaining them for questioning.Chief Fire Officer Pradeep Kumar said the bus, bearing registration number BR32PA8647, was travelling from Kashmere Gate in New Delhi towards Mahoba when it caught fire near the 33-km milestone on the expressway in the Jewar police station area.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the bus fire tragedy and announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who died. A compensation of Rs 50,000 was also announced for the injured victims. "Distressed to hear about the loss of lives due to a fire tragedy on a bus in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. Praying for the swift recovery of the injured," the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) wrote in a post on X. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also announced similar compensation and expressed his condolences to the families of those who died in the fire. He also directed officials to ensure proper treatment for those injured.
