Global electric vehicle major Tesla on Monday launched its first charging facility in India at One BKC in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), marking another milestone in its entry into the country’s premium EV market. The launch comes just weeks after the company unveiled its first Indian Experience Centre and began taking orders for its flagship Model Y SUV.
The charging hub features four V4 Supercharging stalls (DC chargers) capable of delivering peak charging speeds of up to 250 kW, alongside four destination AC charging stalls with an output of 11 kW. Charging is priced at Rs24 per kW for superchargers and Rs14 per kW for the slower AC destination chargers, Tesla said.
The company plans to expand its charging network with three additional facilities in the Mumbai metropolitan region — at Lower Parel, Thane and Navi Mumbai — by the September quarter, as it prepares for the rollout of vehicles from 2025 onward.
Tesla officially entered the Indian market on July 15 with the launch of its Model Y, starting at Rs59.89 lakh, and opened its first Experience Centre in Mumbai. Tesla, led by American tech billionaire Elon Musk who had in the past cited India’s high import tariffs as a key hurdle in entering the market, will initially import the Model Y as a completely built unit (CBU) from its Shanghai manufacturing facility in China.
The mid-sized electric SUV will be offered in two variants a rear-wheel drive version starting at Rs59.89 lakh and a long-range rear-wheel drive configuration priced at Rs67.89 lakh. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the third and fourth quarters of 2025, respectively. With the launch of its charging infrastructure, Tesla has signalled its intent to build a robust ecosystem in India to support premium EV adoption, even as it continues to evaluate domestic manufacturing opportunities. Industry experts say Tesla’s phased rollout of superchargers will be critical for building confidence among early adopters, particularly in urban hubs such as Mumbai.
