Surwal dam overflows, floods villages in Rajasthan’s Sawai Madhopur

Relentless rainfall in Rajasthan has unleashed severe flooding across multiple districts, with Sawai Madhopur bearing the brunt after the Surwal Dam overflowed on Sunday, creating a massive crater and submerging villages.A large section of land near Surwal village caved in, leaving behind a gaping crater that cut off vital access routes. Entire settlements — including Surwal, Dhanoli, Gogor, Jadavata, Shesha, and Machhipura — were inundated, forcing mass evacuations. Hundreds of homes were submerged, and desperate residents sought refuge on rooftops as rising waters isolated their villages.

Relief operations have been severely hampered by washed-out roads and collapsed infrastructure. The Lalsot–Kota Mega Highway has gone underwater, with only tractors and trolleys able to navigate the submerged stretch. Shortages of food, drinking water, and essential supplies have compounded the crisis for those trapped in flood-hit areas.Several parts of neighboring Tonk district, including Kalipaltan, Chatra Khatik, Kafila Bazar, Panch Batti, Dhannatlai, and Kachahari Road, are also reeling under severe waterlogging and infrastructure damage.
Rajasthan minister Kirodi Lal Meena, who visited Sawai Madhopur, acknowledged the unprecedented scale of destruction. “There has never been such a large extent of rainfall here. The overflow of the Surwal Dam has submerged dozens of villages. Houses, shops, and even two temples have been swept away. Those who have suffered losses will be compensated according to the criteria,” he said.Member of Parliament Harish Chandra Meena also inspected affected zones and instructed officials to prioritize drainage clearance and relief measures.
Meanwhile, in Dausa district, 24 hours of continuous downpour turned roads into rivers. Government offices were inundated, and the service lane along Jaipur Road was completely waterlogged, cutting off access to over half a dozen colonies. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for continued heavy rainfall in Rajasthan over the coming days, urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert. In Jaipur, the impact of the relentless rains was also felt at heritage sites. A section of the Rambagh wall near Jwala Mata Temple, on a route leading to Amer Fort, collapsed following the downpour. As a precaution, authorities have suspended elephant rides at the historic fort until conditions improve. With several districts submerged, roads destroyed, and thousands displaced, authorities are racing against time to restore connectivity and deliver aid. For many in Sawai Madhopur and surrounding areas, the overflowing dam has not only reshaped the landscape but also left entire communities battling for survival.
