Sukhbir Singh Badal re-elected President of Akali Dal

Sukhbir Singh Badal, former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, has been unanimously re-elected as the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). The decision was made during a meeting of the party’s delegates held at the Teja Singh Samundari Hall in Amritsar on Friday. The nomination of Sukhbir Singh Badal was proposed by party Working President Balwinder Singh Bhunder and seconded by senior leader Paramjit Singh Sarna. With no other nominations put forward, Gulzar Singh Ranike, the observer appointed for the party president’s election, officially declared Sukhbir Singh Badal re-elected as the SAD president. This unanimous decision underscores the party’s continued confidence in Sukhbir Singh Badal’s leadership and his role in guiding the Shiromani Akali Dal forward.

Sukhbir Badal first took over as SAD chief in 2008, succeeding his father and party patriarch, Prakash Singh Badal. Since then, he had been leading the party until he resigned from the position last year.Following his resignation, Sukhbir Singh Badal underwent a religious punishment, or ‘tankhah’, as part of the process. The SAD had chosen a total of 567 delegates - four each from 117 Assembly constituencies in Punjab - to cast their vote for the new party chief.
