After day long meeting with high octane drama on Monday, the CWC decided that Sonia Gandhi will remain the Congress's interim president for now. The CWC, also decided to form a committee to help Gandhi in day-to-day functioning of the organisation. A session of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) will be called within six months where future course of action will be decided.
According to sources Sonia Gandhi, who was adament to quit the post of party president, agreed to continue. She said after the marathon meeting, “Congress is one big family and I don’t hold anything against anyone. But all, especially senior leaders should raise concerns at the party forum only.” Many leaders including Dr Manmohan Singh, A K Anthony, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ambika Soni and others urged Mrs Gandhi to continue.
Sonia Gandhi completed one year as the party’s interim chief on August 10. She was a full-fledged party president for over 19 years from May 1998 to December 2017 when Rahul Gandhi took over the reins from her and resigned in May 2019 owning moral responsibility for the party’s rout in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
