Before granting interim relief to youtuber Ranveer Allahbadia, the Supreme Court on Tuesday rapped Allahbadia for "vomiting dirt in his mind", and restrained him from doing any other shows for the time being. The court also said Mr Allahbadia, who claimed death threats to his family and himself, he could approach Maharashtra and/or Assam police for "protection of life and liberty, in case of threats". The top court said no further police cases could be filed against him on this matter. He was also told he would not be arrested, by either Maharashtra or Assam cops, so long as he cooperates with the investigation, or on the basis of a third complaint filed in Jaipur.
Allahbadia, however, was told to deposit his passport with police in Maharashtra's Thane, and warned not to try and leave the country without the court's nod. He was also told neither he nor his associates could participate in any further stand-up comedy or 'roast' shows till further notice.
Calling the joke "condemnable, reprehensive and dirty", the top court said there should be responsibility in making such statements and said he should not take society for granted. "Have you got the licence to speak these kinds of things," the bench said. A bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar Singh said, "The words you have chosen, parents will feel ashamed. Daughters and sisters will feel ashamed. The entire society will be ashamed. These are the levels of depravity you and your henchmen have gone. The rule of law and system has to be followed."
Abhinav Chandrachud represented Allahbadia and said his client had received death threats. He cited an instance wherein a Rs 5 lakh reward was declared for those who would cut the YouTuber's tongue. The Supreme Court then hit back at Chandrachud and questioned whether he was defending the language used by the podcaster, even though the advocate said he himself was "disgusted personally" by his obscene remarks.
YouTube removed all the videos of the episodes of 'India's Got Latent' show after receiving a notice from the Centre. The controversy triggered a nationwide debate on the misuse of freedom of speech. Politicians and experts have called for the regulation of content on OTT platforms.
