Sinner crushes Zverev to defend Australian Open crown

World No.1 Jannik Sinner made history after becoming the first Italian to win three Grand Slams, going past Nicola Pietrangeli, who won the French Open in 1959 and 1960. On Sunday, Sinner successfully defended his Australian Open men’s singles title after beating second seed Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in the final at the Rod Laver Arena. Sinner, who has to face the court later this year in April over his doping scandal, took two hours and 42 minutes to get past his German opponent.Sinner has now won three majors in a row on hard courts after winning at Melbourne Park, followed by his maiden triumph at the US Open. 

Zverev, who was looking to become the first German since Boris Becker in 1996 to win a major, was let down by the 45 unforced errors he made. He smashed 12 aces and 25 winners, but they were not enough for him to go past the finish line in the summit clash. As far as Sinner is concerned, he became the eighth player in the Open Era to win his first three Grand Slam men’s singles finals.
