It was the deadliest attack in any Gulf Arab country since the start of the Iran war.The airport had already been struck in two earlier attacks this week that left four people dead and exposed vulnerabilities in the kingdom’s ability to defend itself as it wages war on the Houthis. Saudi Arabia’s early warning system did not issue an alert ahead of Saturday’s incident.
Following the attack, US President Donald Trump, speaking to reporters outside the White House, was asked whether the United States planned to join Saudi strikes on the Houthis. “We may. We’re going to look at it. We just found out about the recent attack, so we’ll make a decision. We move very quickly,” he said. “What happened in Saudi Arabia’s not acceptable,” Trump added.
After the attack occurred, the Houthi military spokesperson retweeted his own post from before the attack, saying only pre-approved humanitarian flights were allowed to land at Riyadh airport, adding the words: “a reminder.” Countries including the United States, Britain, Germany, Australia and Canada warned citizens to avoid the airport. The Houthis have said airliners should avoid Saudi airspace, declaring it a zone of military operations after the Saudi-backed Yemeni government launched an offensive against the group earlier this month.
