Recent reservation rallies by different communities had put Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa in an embroilng situation. BSY is surviving all the distractions from inside the party and outside the party. He is very much concerned over the issues raised by different communities and positively thinking to solve those issues with in the constitutional ambit. But it is not an easy task as the demand from many more communities may crop up during the process. It is peculiar that religious heads are leading these rallies instead of political leaders erasing a thin line of difference between dharma and politics.
Initially, Kurubas started an agitation demanding ST status for their community. This is a decades old demand. At present they are enjoying backward class status. Kaginele Kanaka gurupeetha swamiji Niranjanandapuri lead this successful rally to show case their strength to the government. Infact Kurubas make it to fourth place in terms of population next to lingayaths, vokkaligas and muslims. They constitute 9.3% of the total population of the state. Rural Development Minister KS Eshwarappa is the front line leader supporting the rally although former CM Siddaramaiah is till now considered as its undisputed leader. CM BS Yediyurappa has assured the kuruba leaders all the possible help within constitutional limits.
Another ongoing rally under the leadership of self styled vociferous Basava Jaya Mrutyumjaya swamiji of lingayath panchamsali mutt of Kudala Sangama is reaching Bengaluru on 21st Feb. He is demanding a backward class status for his caste. Panchamasalis are a major segment in overall veerashaiva lingayath community. Ministers Murugesh Nirani and CC Patil who belongs to this panchamasalis sect have negotiated with the agitators but they are adamant to withdraw their strike. This rally is also supported by more than a dozen MLA's belonging to that sub caste like Vijayananda Kashappanavar, Aravinda Bellad irrespective of political party affiliations.
Interestingly, about 500 swamijis of veerashaiva lingayath community met in Bengaluru recently and urged the government to consider all sub castes as backward class for reservations. Panchamsali is one sub sect of lingayaths, and there are hundreds of such sub castes exists in the community. It is not fair to ask for reservations by one sect. All others need it. Off course the entire community of lingayaths deserve reservations as their economic conditions are same as that of panchamasalis.
Besides this, devanga that is weaving community has also put forward a demand for creating a corporation for their welfare. Hampi hemakoota gayatri peethaDayan swamiji Dayanadapuri has warned the government that they would start indefinite strike to press for their demand. Uppara community wants ST tag for their community. Moreover they also wanted 100 crore grant for their corporation to take up welfare schemes. Purushottamanadapuri swamiji of bhagiratha gurupeetha has made this demand to Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa recently at Hosadurga. There is no end for such demands. No community is satisfied with what they are having. Everyone wants More and more. We have totally forgotten that we belong to asecular democratic society. It is high time that BSY in the larger interest of the state has to tackle these absurdities appropriately.
