Karnataka objects to release more Cauvery water to TN

Karnataka would find it difficult to release 12,000 cusecs of Cauvery water daily to Tamil Nadu as directed by the CWMA and was discussing its next course of action. The state government may challenge the order in the Supreme Court, he said Karnataka would ensure that no injustice was done to the state. Karnataka Minister Home Minister Priyank Kharge has said that, the state is in deep crisis, and looming drought situation. So the Chief Minister and all the senior stakeholders will sit and take a call on what to do next. We are here to protect the interests of our people.  We will not do anything that will go against their interest. Whatever has to be done will be done within the legal framework.

Water Resources Minister Ramalinga Reddy also said, the quantity would be difficult for the state to spare. Reddy said Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and he had discussed the order with lawyers in Delhi and irrigation experts in Karnataka and were examining the state's options.Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, the State Water Resources Minister said the government's future course of action would depend on the outcome of the Supreme Court hearing.

Meanwhile, Cauvery Row Intensifies in Mandya.On Wednesday, farmers Block Bengaluru–Mysuru Highway.Farmers’ organisations, backed by Kannada outfits, staged a protest in the district, including the “Pate Pate Chaddi, Tamate” agitation, and blocked the old Bengaluru–Mysuru highway.

Slamming the Karnataka government,Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy has alleged that the state govt delayed taking legal action on Cauvery water issue.the Karnataka government has taken this matter very lightly, he alleged."If Karnataka does not receive sufficient water in the coming months, and the authority continues to direct Karnataka to release water, it will ultimately become very difficult for Karnataka to provide drinking water, including to Bengaluru city. That is the situation we are facing in Karnataka,” he said. 

The Cauvery Water Regulation Committee, which met in New Delhi on Tuesday, directed Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu for 15 days from August 12.
